Symptom

When the website is opened, the server displays an "Internal Server Error". You use a .htaccess file with instructions such as "Options All" or "Options + FollowSymLinks" or similar. In the error log of the web server you see an entry similar

[core:alert] [pid 71745:tid 139842832771936] [client :46188] /var/www/vhosts//httpdocs/.htaccess: Option not allowed here

Cause

For security reasons, the option "FollowSymLinks" in the web server is switched off. This is done by a configuration block

Options=Indexes,SymLinksIfOwnerMatch,ExecCGI,Includes,IncludesNOEXEC


Therefore, some other options are also not available. In normal operating situations further settings are not needed.

Solution

If you want to use "Options +FollowSymLinks", please follow the instructions in the related FAQ article listed below. The directive can easily be replaced by +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch to make it work.
